The DevOps Implementation Roadmap involves 6 steps

1.Introduce DevOps Initiative

Company’s CIO is crucial here in introducing a DevOps initiative part of the organization’s IT activity and facilitating necessary requirements such as investment and human resource. Accordingly, changes are made to the development and operations activities. Following this, the program manager designs a DevOps strategy and monitors its implementation.

2.Develop DevOps Strategy

Best practices that enhance team collaboration and facilitate new ways of infrastructure provisioning, software development and testing are key to DevOps strategy. Program managers will have to set a common goal and align teams in a shared environment making them aware of each other’s duties and responsibilities. Implement Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) mechanism, automate testing, integration, deployment and release processes.

3.Use Containerization

Implement containerization to ensure software reliability while traversing between processes. Containerizing parts of the software make them independent of the overall infrastructure and adds to their abilities of running on any environment without dependencies. Moreover, container packaging helps Ops teams to manage application easily in case of any change required for a specific microservice.

4.Integrate Infrastructure with CI/CD Tools

Container applications demand effective management. Integrating infrastructure automation tools such as Kubernetes, Ansible and Chef with CI/CD tools such as Jenkins, Bamboo, or GoCD can address the concerns of configuration management and effective deployment. These tools prepare containers for risk tolerance by way of continuous monitoring and rolling software updates.

5.More Test Automation and QA-Dev Alignment

More test automation is recommended to achieve faster delivery cycles. That doesn’t mean every test type has to be automated. Depending on the extent of test automation cases, functional testing can remain manual. On the other hand, QA-Dev alignment is very important to address post-release issues. This alignment helps in early bug detection and helps developers address the issue before the release of the next build.

5.Application Performance Monitoring

Application performance monitoring offers DevOps team’s transparency over issues occurring in the process chain. It helps in detecting, prioritizing and isolating application defects and their root causes using respective software. These issues are usually revealed at the time of application server and UX monitoring activities.
